Can you tell your nano-break from a staycation?

March 17th, 2009

My colleague and I were discussing the merits of a ‘nano-break’ (a one-night trip away, often to a far-flung destination), and she pointed out that the credit crunch has brought with it a whole new  vocabulary – almost as if we can make a thing less scarey if we can find a cute name for it – after all, if the term ‘credit crunch’ isn’t a euphemism for ‘recession’ (or should that be ‘depression’?), I don’t know what is.

Here are some of my favourites:

Nan0-break: As above – an overnight ‘holiday’, often to exotic locations such as Hong Kong or Dubai

Staycation: spending your holiday time at home – because you can’t afford to go anywhere else

Frugalista: someone who makes a virtue out of frugality – so like a fashionista, but cheap as chips

I wish somebody would come up for a new term for ‘credit crunch’ …

    Here’s a couple more suggestions…

Websiteseeing- Explore far flung destinations you’ve always wanted to visit by typing them into google maps. If you use street view, it’s like you’re really there… about to get arrested for jaywalking.

Piggybackpacking- Travelling to another country by hiding in a complete stranger’s rucksack.

Vepcotion- Experience the many different cultures of the world entirely by visiting Disney’s Epcot theme park. It’s the friendly face of ethnic stereotyping.
